What is the NASDAQ-100 Index?
The Nasdaq-100 is a stock market index that tracks the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
The index is weighted by market capitalization, so companies with larger market values have a greater influence on the movement of the Nasdaq-100.
The Nasdaq-100 traditionally had its major annual reconstitution in December. However, the methodology was changed on May 1, 2026.
Under the new rules, Nasdaq introduced quarterly reviews in March, June and September. The new methodology also allows very large newly listed companies to enter the index through a Fast Entry process.
This means that large companies such as SpaceX and Anthropic, if they become publicly listed on Nasdaq, could potentially become candidates for inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 sooner than under the previous system.
New Nasdaq-100 Rules: Changes to the Free Float Requirement
The rules concerning free float were also changed in 2026.
Previously, companies with less than 10% of their shares available for public trading were generally excluded from the Nasdaq-100.
Under the new rules, companies with a free float below 10% can potentially be included. However, companies with a low free float are subject to limitations on their initial index weighting.
For securities with a free float below 33⅓%, the initial index weight is subject to a cap based on the free-float percentage.
This change makes it easier for large companies whose founders or major shareholders hold a large percentage of the shares to become eligible for the Nasdaq-100.
As a result, if large private companies such as SpaceX or Anthropic eventually become publicly listed, the amount of shares available for public trading alone would be less likely to prevent them from becoming candidates for Nasdaq-100 inclusion.
